After testing with the Traccar Android app - I can see that data buffering seems to work great. I don't expose my private traccar server to the Internet so as soon as I get home my buffered data is uploaded and my trips/replay/etc all seem correct... more or less. There is still some fine tuning to do.
Unfortunately the traccar app is huge battery drain (5 sec updates) plus I don't need to track the location of my phone. I just want to track my car trips. The plan now is buy and configure the 'Freematics ONE+ Traccar Edition' for my private server and upload data when I'm within wifi range at home. I think my only remaining question is whether the freematics tracker will buffer location data until the car is home and within wifi range. It's not clear to me if that is possible.
Why would you want that? If someone steals your car you cant even track it.
You can use a free tier server also if you cant affort it.
I'm setting this up for business mileage tracking. I also want to keep my location data to myself.
Maybe someday I'll put a data SIM in the tracker but it's not a priority.
