Something else that keeps me wondering is that I have a Teltonika device with an unknown status but the ignition is on. Shouldn't that be ignitionOff in that case?
Online status means the tracking device reports periodicly to the server that it is Online (which it should be to able to send status to the server, like Engine on / off or device postions etc.
Ignition has to do with the status of the car Engine and has nothing to do with the tracker itself. It just reports if the Engine is On or Off
If the device status is Unknown then its probably Offline, since it did not send the data that it was online. There can be many reasons for that, simcard has no data, network error, no network coverage, device switched off etc.

It's possible that the last position reported by your Teltonika device was with the ignition on, and then the device may have stopped sending new positions. This could explain why you're seeing an unknown status while the ignition still appears to be on.
In Teltonika devices, you have the option to configure the transmission of information based on changes in the ignition status. This means the device can be set to send an update whenever there is a change in the state of the ignition, whether turning on or off.
Hey everybody
What is the difference between online status and ignition on/off ?
