Traccar sends command back through the same connection that device opened to report location data.
yes gps device send the information to the server via gprs.
and if you meant by command something like (heartbeat response) yes if the device is supported by traccar such as tk102 otherwise you have to edit it to suite with your need.

I'm new to the traccar application and would like to know more about how this application.
I want to implement my own server to track my cars. I know that I would need to download the server code and configure it on some hosting company. Also I would need to purchase gps devices that are supported by the application.
Can someone tell me how the communication happens between the application and the gps. Do I need a service provider such as T mobile, Verizon ...etc.
