Traccar Idea

Hi,

Can you tell me how Traccar works and what is its idea of operation, i know it is a java service but, does it use websockets or regular sockets or something else?

I am asking this because i've tried alot of things to establish a connection between GPS tracking device and my Ubuntu server, but all of them failed. I couldn't find anything that can support Meiligao Protocol.
Until i found Traccar.
