Topin Connecting Problems

Frank Meier5 years ago

Sometimes it takes very long (minutes) for the tracker to connect to the server propertly... always connects/disconnects without sending any data. Here is the server-log; any ideas where to improve? Many thanks...

Any hints/ideas if this is a Device Problem or a Server Problem?

Dan Dyse4 years ago

Trying to use my Topin 612 devices, but don't even get anything in the logs. What port did you use?

Frank Meier4 years ago

Topin Protocol --> Port 5199; works fine!

Dan Dyse4 years ago

Thanks, no luck here. Have tried several ports now. Nothing in the logs.
Traccar has ZX612 on port 5023 in the list (GT06) but this doesn't work either.
When I use my phone and port 5055 it works, so the server is ok.
Very annoying.

Dan Dyse4 years ago

It was a problem with my SIM card. Server and device (5199) both work, very quick actually. I can try setting my device to work with your server if this could help.

Hi Dan, thanks for these information. As we are testing with the same unit we should share our experience. How can I reach you directly? Email? Thx..!

Please no sharing personal contact details.

Dan Dyse4 years ago

Okay. Anton, do you have an explanation for the warning / error I mentioned in
https://www.traccar.org/forums/topic/zx612-topin-protocol-battery-level/#post-52448
?

The issue is getting even worse... sometimes I even have GPS signal (blue LED) - but the yellow one is blinking fast... try to communicate with server but is not connecting. This is the case for 15min now (server log: connected / disconnected every 20s or so).
This is getting frustrating as I only have one unit and I don't know where to change something. I tried already 2 different sims... same issue.

  • If the unit connects it seems to be quite stable.
  • When I restart the traccar server the unit connects immediately...

Therefore I think it is not an issue with the logger, more with the server config...!? Server is running on a raspberry pi4 - only with ONE logger connected.
Thx for your help...!

Fast blinking yellow is a problem with GPRS as far as I know. It must blink slowly to be ok. Otherwise it will not be able to communicate with the server. I bet there is an issue with your SIM card or mobile network.

Frank Meier4 years ago

Yes, yellow is GSM Signal... but it's only blinking slow if connected to a server.
I am still able to send and receive SMS signals (e.g. 999) - and will get the location of the tracker... so communication is functioning with SMS commands (also if there is no connection with traccar and fast yellow blinking).
That's why I am confused.

I tried already different antennas, but didn't work out. I now use the original one.
Hope to get the ZX302 soon, then I'll have another Unit which I can test...

A slowly blinking yellow does not mean it is connected, it just means it is ABLE to send / receive data. SMS has nothing to do with this. You can have a SIM without mobile data - the device will be able to reply to SMS commands, but they will make the device blink fast forever, because they cannot establish data connection.

Dan, thanks very much for your help. I just realized the mobile data works much better outdoor, indoor there are problems with my ZX612 - do you have the same experience or do I have a weak device? I have to state that I made much of tests with it... soldering / packaging / different antennas and so on, so therefore it could somehow be damaged!??

Dan Dyse4 years ago

I do have weak gps data indoors (obviously), but not with connection. If you don't have problems with your phone I don't think the gps device will have. But I am not an expert. I have ordered a bunch of ZX303 and looking forward to use them for tracking bikes. Topin says the protocol is the same.
