I was able to successfully deploy an Ubuntu Traccar server on the public Internet.
I loaded JRE7, downloaded and installed, Traccar, and was able to log into the gui using admin/admin.
I configured the firewall to only allow SSH, port 8082, and TCP/UDP port 5055.
However, I then downloaded and installed the client on my Android phone. I configured it to point to my public IP address, port 5055, and started the client - however it does not show up on the console.
I looked for some documentation online on where to begin debugging - where would I start?

You can check log file (tracker-server.log). If servers receives any data from the device, you should see raw message dumps there in HEX format.
