Server does not connect to the device. There is a single port for each protocol. You can find ports on the "Devices" page on this website.

Do you know why does the device allow a port setting? (does it actually make a difference?)

Device allows port setting because port numbers are arbitrary and every tracking software vendor uses their own numbers. Traccar uses 5xxx ports. Some other software might use other port numbers, so device obviously needs to be configurable.
Server can send commands over the internet. Not sure why you assume it can't.

When configuring the device port, we set the port on the device AND the server.
Are these related? I have a clone (mt-1). In the documentation for setting the device port it shows #8000. I gather this is the port that de device uses to connect to the server.
What is the port that we set on the server then? Port that the server uses to conect to the device?
Are they supposed to be the same?
